Navajo Nation Council Votes To Ban Public Smoking On Reservation

The Navajo Nation Council on Friday voted 42-27 to proscription smoking and chewing tobacco in public places on the booking, the AP/Arizona Daily Star reports. The ban does not include tobacco secondhand in ceremonies on the reservation, placed on portions of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

The tribe's Division of Health would manage compliance with the ban and issue fines of $100 for the start violation, $200 for the second and $500 for the third. Increasing hours of community service as well would be an choice for violators of the ban.

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley has 10 days to sign or veto the legislation. Thomas Walker, shop of the tobacco ban legislation, aforementioned that Shirley has non made a direct dedication to sign it, though two eld ago Shirley made a tobacco-free promulgation of his own.

Walker added, "I think the council made a wise determination that puts the health and wellbeing of the people offset." Patricia Nez Henderson, vice president of the Blackhill Center for American Indian Health, said that the ban could help warn young tribal members from starting to smoke as well as help others who want to stop smoking and protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke.

The Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise opposes the tobacco bachelor of Arts in Nursing, saying that it could put the tribe's first casino at a disadvantage because competitors still would permit smoke. The casino is expected to open later this year (Major Holmes, AP/Arizona Daily Star, 7/28).

Taz, Jawani On The Rocks

The British prince of Indian pop, Tarseme Singh has strived to change with the times. From his early days as bhangra sensation, Johnny Zee, to his reinvention as fusion artist Taz from Stereo Nation, he continues to create music that appeals to the masses.

Equally popular in India as he is in his native UK, the Midlands based singer/songwriter hits all the right notes with Jawani On The Rocks. With something for everyone, this catchy blend of Indian pop, Punjabi folk, RnB and Hip Hop tunes sounds just as at home played in the car as they would in a nightclub or iPod.

Featuring his characteristic mixture of Hindi, Punjabi and English lyrics, this time we also get a bit of Spanish thrown in for good measure in the title track Jawani. Accompanied by South American rapper, Don Minicano, Taz creates the kind of cracking song that has radio airplay written all over it. Showing off Taz's vocal dexterity and range, it's a winner from beginning to end.

Just as catchy is Hilgaya which features Shibani Kashyup. Beginning with a remixed sample of Taal Se Taal from the Hindi film, Taal, the song quickly transforms into a thumping dance number. Illustrating Taz's superior skills in singing Hindi, it's a wonder why Bollywood hasn't utilised his talents more often.

Sticking out amongst the compilation like a bit of a sore thumb is the Punjabi number, Boli Pa Mitran featuring Sarbjit Kaur. Its traditional flavour doesn't gel with the contemporary flavour of the rest of the album. The same could be said of the unnecessary updated version of the celebratory wedding classic, Aaj Meri Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai.

Recorded in the UK and Mumbai, the album boasts good production values and a smooth international sound that highlights Taz's crooning ability. You'd be hard pushed not to relive your Jawani (youth) by bopping along to this gem of an album.

Chante Moore sticks to roots with 'Love The Woman': review

Over the course of her 15-year career, Chante Moore has thrived off of songs about the essence of love and relationships - especially with her two albums with hubby Kenny Lattimore.

So it's fitting - even after eight years without a solo project - that Moore would stick with the similar formula that earned her three gold-selling albums during 1990s.

On her new album, "Love The Woman," her lyrical approach is very familiar to past hits "Chante's Got a Man" and "Love's Taken Over." But that's not a bad thing, as Moore flourishes with her soulful, high-pitched vocals on the slow-paced track "It Ain't Supposed To Be This Way." On the George Duke-produced rendition of Minnie Ripperton's "Give Me Time," she recalls her unsteady emotions before falling for Lattimore.

"Time measures love/And I don't know why/My love before I met you/I just could not feel/Then you touch my heart and taught me to live," she bellows on the song.

Moore also strives to empower her fellow woman to understand their self worth on "Special," a smooth acoustic guitar track produced by Raphael Saddiq. On the piano-driven melody, "My Eyes," Moore insists that hiding emotions isn't her best trait.

Moore's lyrics aren't that fresh compared to her previous projects. But she still understands what works for her and what her fans expect her to produce.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: The Nancy Wilson remake "Guess Who I Saw Today" is a jazzy song as Moore harmonizes well with her calm, soft-toned voice, describing her attempts to catch a cheating lover.
